2010 Marin Mount Vision 5.9 Review

In this post I'll review the 2010 Marin Mount Vision 5.9 Mountain Bike from Bike Pedalers. I picked it up Friday and rode it home on the city bike trails and through some residential neighborhoods.

First off I want to mention that I have almost no MTB (Mountain Bike) experience. I had a 15 year old $80 MTB from Wal-Mart before moving to Lincoln and really starting to ride bikes, then I rode a Marin Comfort bike for 2 years and 6,000+ miles before buying my Felt Z-70 road bike last fall. So, for me to review the Marin Mount Vision 5.9 is like having someone that drives a Camaro test drive a Hummer - it's not really apples to apples. But, if your considering jumping into single track in a big way, maybe my thoughts will be helpful.

After leaving Bike Pedalers Friday afternoon I was quickly impressed with the hydraulic disc brakes, they stop on a dime and you'd better be ready or your going over the handle bars. You quickly realize you need to feather the brakes. The breaks are incredible and are VERY responsive. You give it a little break, you get a little break, you give them a big squeeze and you will stop right where you are. Their predictable, and once you have a feel for them, they invoke a strong sense of confidence.

The Marin Mount Vision 5.9 is a full suspension bike, you can look up the specks for the low-down on how it works. I noticed that it felt plush and forgiving on the streets and trails. Any cracks, bumps, holes, etc. were just floated over. Rather than the harsh treatment I'm accustomed to on my rigid road bike. Of course it takes a bit more effort to build up momentum and keep it going, but it really wasn't as bad as I anticipated. It weighs in at 25 lbs and can hold it's own on the pavement, it's not the tank I thought it might be.

I love the way it shifts, it's responsive, smooth and quick. Being used to my 30 speed road bike I noticed my cadence was faster when I was maxed out in the gears going downhill on pavement with the wind, but for anything short of that, there was a gear for every situation.

I also really liked the ergonomics, I found out fast that I needed to raise the seat a couple of times, because when your riding it the rear shock is absorbing your weight and that sets the bike lower than when your off the seat. Once I had that adjusted to my liking I felt really in-tune with the bike and like it was a natural extension of my body. It really fits well. The bars are comfortable, the saddle is surprisingly comfortable and it was just an all around joy to ride.

The Marin Mount Vision 5.9 looks as cool as it is, and is fun to be seen on around town.

Yesterday morning I joined up with the folks from bentventure.com I rode 12 miles across town to our starting point. Again I loved the way it acted in a urban riding environment. I'll write more about the ride in another blog post and just focus on the bike in this post. We began by heading N.W. on gravel to Branched Oak Lake, the last mile or two was on highways. The Marin Mount Vision 5.9 loves gravel! It was SO smooth over the rocks and bumps. It was sure-footed in deep loose gravel, would climb like that's what it was meant to do and bomb down hills like it was going out of style. The only weakness was the rider.

At the lake we hit the single track mountain bike trails. Now, this is where the Marin Mount Vision 5.9 really felt at home. Wow! It was SO fun. Even though I'm not an experienced single track rider I was safe and secure and had a sense of confidence the whole time. I truly felt like the bike was reading my mind. It absolutely did everything I asked of it. It was shocking how fast, smooth and agile it was. I had the time of my life. If you take nothing else from this review, take heart in this... The Marin Mount Vision 5.9 will go wherever you point it. And not where you don't. Even at times when I was riding outside of my abilities, the bike was forgiving and well behaved. We rode single track for several miles and I never had to get off and walk it, never accidentally strayed off the path and didn't wreck the whole time. It was predictable and knew what it was doing even when I wasn't. This bike will get you where you want to be quickly and safely.

We then left and rode down highways into the wind to James Arthur Vineyards. By the time we got there I was spent. I'd put 46 miles on the Marin Mount Vision 5.9 on Saturday alone. Some of the group continued riding back to Lincoln while I joined a couple others in a car ride back to town. The bike was a blast and was capable on all terrains. But really shines in the places I can only dream of going on my road bike.

I also want to mention the reliability. I didn't have any mechanical issues whatsoever all weekend. Not so much as a flat.

If your ready to step up to a more capable mountain bike. Or want to jump into a new sport with both feet. Then you've got to give Bike Pedalers a call, or stop by and see the Marin Mount Vision 5.9 in person. This bike is a demo and is available to perspective buyers to take out and put through the paces. Rather than just riding around the parking lot of the bike shop. That way you can feel confident that the Marin Mount Vision 5.9 is the right bike to get you out on the trails and home quickly, safely, and with more fun that you can imagine!

Picked up the 2010 Marin Mount Vision 5.9 demo!

I rode to work today, and on the way home I swung by Bike Pedalers to demo their Marin Mount Vision 5.9.

Tomorrow I'm going to take it out and let you know more about it and what I thought of it. Stay tuned! Today's miles on the commute and detour to Bike Pedalers = 27.4 miles.

Always something new on the ride.

Today started off cool at 27' for the ride to work, but warmed by over 30' by afternoon. It was perfect for riding. And... Whatever these two guys were doing with a shopping cart in the drainage canal near the zoo. One guy was trying to fish something out of the water with his hands. You never know what kind of crazy stuff you'll find when you leave your coffin parked at home and spend some time outdoors. Today's miles = 19.6

I kinda cheated today.

Ok, not to be a baby or anything, but... sometime this month I needed to take the pick-up to Columbus for work and haul stuff back to Lincoln.

Well, this morning's cold rain and 20 - 30 mph headwind was all it took to convince me that today would be a great day to work on the road. I threw the bike in the pick-up and hit the highway. I even had to drive through snow at one point.

Once back at the office, the skies cleared and temps rose, so I decided to ride home and get 1/2 a commute in today. The ride home was ssssoooo sweet. The tailwind was outstanding, lots of great people were out riding and it was just a fast fun ride.

But, best of all, I finally got to meet local cycling\blogging legend, The Chubby Super Biker!!! I ran into him on the Billy Wolff trail on his commute home and we rode and talked the rest of the way. Meeting up with someone who encourages others to ride by example, and by sharing his personal story was the highlight of my day. I really admire him and the way he proves that anyone can bike and what it's done for him. But, make no mistake, he's hardcore. (That makes me skipping this mornings commute look like a real wussy move, huh?)

Then this evening our youngest and I rode to the church. Bringing today's total miles to 19.5

Soup on the trail.

You won't be bummed to know the new Matt Talbot soup kitchen is now open on N. 27th along the John Dietrich Trail. The old outreach center is being dozed as part of the Antelope Valley Project which will connect the trails downtown.

Today's miles to work and back = 19.8

One less car.

I rode to work today with a breeze, but not the strong winds we've grown accustomed to. Today is the 2nd day in a row that Lincoln didn't have wind gusts over 30 mph after NINE days in a row of winds reaching over 30 mph.

I stopped at the post office on the way home and saw a serious cyclist already in line. His mom walked as he made his way running errands on his 2-wheeled rig. I told him his bike was really cool, and asked if he rode a lot? He said, "Oh yes, a whole lot!" I love it!

Today's miles = 19.7

Today's bike ride was a niece idea.

We celebrated Easter with family today. I found out my sister had a trailer for her bike and I used it to give my nieces a ride down their gravel road. They loved it as much as I did. They would go, "aaahhhhhhh" and hear their voices shake as they bounced across the washboard. Too funny!

GPBC Easter Candy Ride.

I met up with "Patches" (that's what I'm calling him now) and a handful of others at 84th St & Hwy 6 for a spin to the candy store. We rode 5 miles past just for the fun of it, then turned back into a very tough headwind for the 15 miles back to Lincoln.

Patches picked up a nail and got a big pinch flat. He tried to repair it with 5 patches, but the tube was ruined. His spares were both 20" and his rear wheel was 26", he was able to stretch one enough to fit and was good to go.

I fought the wind back across town on the 84th St trail going home and arrived back at the house with a respectable wind/sunburn and 48.1 miles for the day.

Wrong forecast, 2nd flat & floss flashing. Nonetheless it was a Good Friday.

Last night the forecast for today included a 70% chance of rain, heavy wind and temps 20' lower than Thursday... Well, this morning I woke to find a great morning and almost no rain in the forecast. We still had the wind, but, with the sun shining the cooler day seemed perfect.

On the way to work I got my 2nd flat so far this year. It happened near Casey's on 56th & Superior. They have free air, so I pumped up the tube and I made it the rest of the way to work. I later patched the hole and was good as new.

I did some other errands on the way home before running into this satin sweetie. The trails were full of bikes, but this mountain biking mama caught my eye as she chilled her crotch and allowed her thong to take some peeks from between her cheeks.

While there is nothing hotter than sexy panties, or chicks on bikes - somehow, this wasn't quite what I'd been dreaming of finding out on the trails.

Even though I'd been deflated in more ways than one on today's commute, I still had a great day on the bike. Tomorrow is the MTB TT in Jewel Park and the Chocolate Easter Bunny Ride with the GPBC. Hope you'll get some miles in this weekend. Today's miles = 21.2

Rode to Maundy Thursday.

Our youngest and I rode to the church tonight. That's all I was able to get in today. It was nice to get him out for a ride for the first time this year. And I'm glad it was a short trip so he didn't get tired or frustrated. 4.5 miles for the day.
